If you like to shop, you will be spoiled for choice in Munich. Stroll from the Hotel Königshof through the pedestrian walk of the old city, to Maximillianstraße. On your way, visit Dallmayr, the city’s oldest purveyor of fine foods or other traditional retailers in the area. Every street you explore will offer more unexpected delights.
Museums
The three world-renowned Pinakothek museums are walking distance from the Hotel. The Alte Pinakothek holds old European Masters. The Neue Pinakothek contains works from the 18th through early 20th Century. The Pinakothek der Moderne is Germany’s largest museum of Modern Art.
The Deutsches Museum (The German Museum) is the largest science and technology museum in the world. Explore the interactive displays such as glassblowing, or step back centuries to see Galileo’s laboratory. Innovation and invention come alive at this remarkable venue.
Beer gardens
Summer in Munich means time spent at the extensive variety of beer gardens in the city. Relax. Linger for an afternoon. Enjoy the best Bavarian beer along with the locals. It’s as if the city and the beverage were created for each other.
If you come to Munich in late September and early October, you can’t help but be caught up in the celebration of Oktoberfest. The massive annual festival of beer, with its tents, foods, drink and music, is walking distance from the Hotel Königshof.
The city’s sights
Marienplatz, the historic centre of Munich, with its Glockenspiel that chimes and charms three times a day, is a short stroll down the pedestrian walkway. Continue to the Viktualienmarkt, just around the corner from Marienplatz. This food market has been part of this city’s core since 1807. With its food stalls and beer garden, you can relax with refreshment under the chestnut trees.
The renowned Englischer Garten (English Garden), one of the largest city parks in Europe sits on the banks of the Isar River. One of the most beloved parts of the city, the English Garden offers much to discover including a lake and Chinese pagoda. Enjoy a stroll, or in the warmer months, sunbathing, paddle boating or one of the many beer gardens that are open throughout the garden.
The Residenz, located in the heart of the city, was the home to Bavarian kings until 1918. Its roots date to the late 1300s when it was a moated castle. Since the late 1500s it’s been transformed through the addition of ornate interiors and courtyards. Today there are about 130 rooms on display, housing treasures of past monarchs.
Started in 1664, the stunning gardens and buildings at Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymphenburg Palace) were expanded over a century to create the royal residence. Explore the main building and its majestic rooms. Outside, wander through the extensive gardens and outbuildings. This grand example of Bavaria’s past can be accessed by streetcar.
Munich offers a wealth of choice for those who love opera and theatre. Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) is one of the world’s renowned opera companies and performs in the National Theatre, on Maximillianstraße. The impressive building, now with a five-tiered auditorium, was built in 1811. It’s rich past and proud history includes the debut of several of Wagner’s operas.
Next door to the opera house is Bayerische Staatsschauspiel. The building welcomes a range of dramatic productions. Around the corner is the Cuvilliés Theatre, a beautiful Rococo theatre that stages performances throughout the season. Munich is rich with performances from classical to avant-garde. If football is your passion, you may wish to visit the home of FC Bayern Munich and the stadium that hosted the opening match for World Cup 2006. To reach the Allianz Arena, take the U-Bahn (U-6 line) north from Marienplatz to Fröttmaning. Alternatively, you could visit the Olympic Park Area. A ride north on the U3 line from Marienplatz will bring you the site of the 1972 summer games. Here you can explore the venues and the park or ascend the Olympic Tower for a wonderful view of the park and the city, or to enjoy a meal at the revolving restaurant.

Munich is a great location for exploring the surrounding areas. The following sights are a comfortable and convenient day trip.
Salzburg
This charming Austrian city is only 90 minutes by train from Munich. With several trains departing daily from the central station, just 500 metres from Hotel Königshof, it’s a simple, scenic journey to the home of Mozart.
Neuschwanstein
This fairy-tale castle is a must-see for visitors to Bavaria. The most ambitious of King Ludwig II’s projects was started in 1869. He moved into his dream castle 15 years later, just months before his death. This delightful destination was the inspiration for Disney’s castle and is only an hour from Munich.
Legoworld
For our young guests, or those particularly young-at-heart, Legoworld is an easy day excursion. This amusement park has more than 40 attractions. Here you can discover what 50 million pieces of Lego can create.
Dachau
About 15 km (9 miles) north of Munich is Dachau, a small town now known primarily for being home to the first concentration camp set up in 1933. Today it is a place of remembrance with the KZ Gedenkstätte memorial and one of the most visited locations in the country. You may also visit the museum and exhibition. The town itself dates back 1100 years and boasts a beautiful Renaissance palace and adjoining gardens.
